In centuries gone by, folk-law shows hand fasting was a popular custom in the British Isles of the rural areas of Scotland, Wales and Ireland as these were known as the Celtic lands, and formerly recognized handfasting as a marriage, just as binding as one performed in a church.

Meanings and Traditions
In traditional Celtic hand fasting the ribbons that bind the couple’s hands, are made up of thirteen different colors, each with its own special meaning.

How to choose your colors

  • Red: Passion, strength, lust, fertility
  • Blue or Aqua Blue: Tranquility, patience, devotion, sincerity, safe journey & Strength
  • Orange: Encouragement, attraction, kindness, plenty
  • Yellow: Charm, confidence, joy and balance
  • Green: Finances, fertility, charity, prosperity, health
  • Purple: Power, piety, sanctity, sentimentality
  • Black: Strength, wisdom, vision, success
  • White: Purity, concentration, meditation, peace
  • Grey: Neutrality, cancelling, balance
  • Pink: Unity, honor, truth, romance, happiness
  • Brown: Earth, grounding, talent, telepathy, home
  • Silver: Treasure, values, creativity, inspiration
  • Gold: Energy, wealth, intelligence, longevity
